There is great variation in the API scores received by schools throughout the region (Chart 1 of 5).

  • While a great number of schools in the LA Unified School district are receiving API scores below 500, few schools outside of LA Unified receive such low scores.
  • Despite LA Unified’s schools’ low APIs, LA County’s schools as a whole look quite similar to the region outside LA County.

In the region, students are mostly likely to be in schools achieving medium API scores, 600-700 (Chart 2 of 5).

  • Only 11 percent of students in the region outside of Los Angeles County (as compared with 20% in the Los Angeles Region) are enrolled in schools with an API score of less than 500.
  • Students in the region outside Los Angeles County are slightly more likely (37% compared to 30%) to be enrolled in schools where the API score is above 700 than students in the Los Angeles Region.

Students in LA County are not unlikely to be in schools with API scores under 600 (Chart 4 of 5).

  • In Los Angeles County, as much as 29% of the students are enrolled in schools with an API score under 500, more than three times the proportion in the region outside Los Angeles County.
  • Only 22% of students (as compared to 37% in the region outside Los Angeles County) are enrolled in schools with API scores over 700.

Most students in the LA Unified School district are in schools with API scores under 600 (Chart 5 of 5).

  • About 48% of students in the LAUSD are enrolled in schools with an API score under 500, about four and a half times as many as in the region outside LA County.
  • Only 10% in the LAUSD students are enrolled in schools with an API score over 700. Recall that in the region outside of Los Angeles County, 37% of students are enrolled in such schools.
