Enrollment has grown steadily over the last decade (Chart 1 of 4).

  • Enrollment in the region now exceeds 3 million students.
  • More than two-thirds of a million more students have entered the system since 1990.
  • Enrollment in both Los Angeles County and outlying counties has grown steadily.

  • Enrollment growth in Los Angeles Unified stagnated briefly in early 1990s, then matched the rest of the region.
  • The greatest cumulative increase in enrollment has been outside Los Angeles County.

Private schools a minor component of education system in the region (Chart 3 of 4).

  • Less than 10% of all students are in private schools.
  • Private enrollment is more common in Orange and Los Angeles Counties
  • Private enrollment is least common in Ventura County
