The number of non-English speaking
students continues to grow throughout the region (Chart 1 of 3).

- The number of non-English speaking students has increased by
more than 280,000 since 1990.
- The number of non-English speaking students has increased almost
25 percent since 1990.
Growth of the proportion of non-English
speaking students in the region has leveled off (Chart 2 of 3).

- Though the numbers of non-English speaking students has
continued to grow since 1990, their proportion of all students in
the region now remains stable at about 30 percent.
- The proportion of students in Los Angeles Unified School
District who are not English speaking has dropped since 1994, from
47 to 42 percent.
- The proportion of the region's students outside Los Angeles
County who are not English speaking has increased steadily since
1990, from 17 to 24 percent.
A small proportion of
non-English speaking students are being redesignated as fluent in
English each year (Chart 3 of 3).
