Minority Students (4 Charts)

As the proportion of minority students increases in a district, so does the proportion of minority teachers (Chart 1 of 4).

  • In districts with more than 90 percent minority enrollment, 50 percent of teachers are minorities.
  • In districts with less than 70 percent minority enrollment, less than 20 percent of teachers are minorities.
  • Note that there are no districts in the Los Angeles Region where fewer than 10 percent of students are minorities.

Minority students are less likely to have fully credentialed teachers (Chart 2 of 4).

  • In districts with more than 90 percent minority enrollment, just over 70 percent of teachers have full credentials.
  • In districts with less than 40 percent minority enrollment, more than 90 percent of teachers have full credentials.
  • Proportions of teachers with full credentials are lower in Los Angeles County, even in districts with relatively low minority enrollment.

The proportion of minority students in a school has some correlation with the average years of teaching experience in that school (Chart 3 of 4).

  • Although teacher credentialing is related to the proportion of minority students in a district, teacher experience is not closely related, a somewhat surprising finding.
  • Nevertheless, average teacher experience is about 11 years in districts with at least 80 percent minority students, which is lower than elsewhere in the region.

A district's average teacher salary is not related to the proportion of minority students in that district (Chart 4 of 4).
