Districts with more poor students have more minority teachers (Chart 1 of 4).

  • Regionwide, in districts with less than 30 percent of students participating in subsidized meal programs, less than 16 percent of teachers are minorities.
  • The relationship is much stronger in Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles Unified School District: districts with more than 60 percent of students participating in subsidized meal programs have more than 35 percent minority teachers.
  • In LA County and regionwide, districts with more than 90 percent of students participating in subsidized meal programs have nearly 70 percent minority teachers.

Poor students are less likely to have fully credentialed teachers (Chart 2 of 4).

  • Across the region, districts in with less than 20 percent of students participating in subsidized meal program have more than 90 percent teachers with full credentials.
  • Districts with more than 60 percent of students participating in subsidized meal program have less than 80 percent teachers with full credentials.

Poor students are likely to have less experienced teachers (Chart 3 of 4).

  • The pattern is fairly consistent, but the relationship is not strong.
  • Across the region, districts with less than 40 percent of students participating in subsidized meal program have teachers averaging more than 12 years of experience.
  • Districts with more than 80 percent of students participating in subsidized meal program have teachers averaging less than 11 years of experience.

A district's average teacher salary is unrelated to the proportion of students who are poor in that district (Chart 4 of 4).
