Enrollment: Growth, Public and Private

Enrollment has grown steadily over the last decade.

  • Enrollment in the Five County Region now exceeds 3 million students.
  • More than 2/3 of a million more students have entered the system since 1990.
  • Enrollment growth in Los Angeles Unified School District stagnated briefly in early 1990s.
  • Enrollment in both Los Angeles County and Outside Los Angeles County has grown steadily, though enrollment in the outlying counties have grown more quickly.

Private schools are a minor component of education system in the region.

  • In the Five County Region, 10% of students are in private schools.
  • Private enrollment is more common in Orange and Los Angeles Counties.
  • Private enrollment is least common in Ventura County.

Private school growth does not match growth in public school enrollments.

  • Public school enrollment has increased by more than 500,000 since 1995.
