Experienced Teachers: How Common? How Much Variation?

Experienced teachers are fairly evenly distributed throughout the region.
(Chart 1 of 2)

Data Source: http://data1.cde.ca.gov/dataquest/ and http://www.cde.ca.gov/demographics/files/paif.htm

  • Little variation in the distribution of teaching experience is apparent at the county and regional level.
  • Outside Los Angeles County, the average teacher has about 13 years of experience.
  • In the Los Angeles Unified School District, the average teacher has nearly 12 years of experience.

Other Points (Not Shown on Chart):

  • There is more variation in teacher experience at the district level within each county.
  • There is moderate variation in average teacher experience across districts.
  • In most districts, teachers have on average between 10 and 15 years of experience.
  • There are extreme cases, as in Desert Center Unified in Riverside County (where teachers have on average 6 years of experience) and Santa Clara Elementary in Ventura County (which teachers have on average 23.5 years of experience)
  • There is wider variation in average teacher experience among schools.
  • In 934 schools, for example, teachers have on average less than 10 years of experience.
  • In 669 schools, teachers have on average more than 15 years of experience.

While there is an "old guard," a substantial proportion of teachers are relatively new.
(Chart 2 of 2)

Data Source: http://www.cde.ca.gov/demographics/files/paif.htm

  • About one in four teachers throughout the region has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the profession, with more than twenty years of experience teaching.
  • However, an even larger proportion, more than a third of teachers throughout the region, has been teaching for five years or less, indicating substantial turnover in the ranks.

Other Points (Not Shown on Chart):

  • About 16% of teachers across the region are in their first two years teaching.
  • In Los Angeles Unified School District, about 19% of teachers are in their first two years teaching.
  • Novice teachers are somewhat less common in the region outside of Los Angeles County.
