Teacher Demographics

Most teachers are women (Chart 1 of 3).

  • More than two-thirds of teachers are women throughout the Five County Region.
  • A slightly higher proportion of teachers are men in Los Angeles Unified School District.
  • We have looked at time-series data and found that the ratios have not changed significantly in recent years.

While demographics vary across the region, most teachers are Anglos (Chart 2 of 3).

  • More than two-thirds of the region's teachers are Anglos.
  • Region-wide, about 15% of teachers are Latinos, about 7 % are Black, and About 6% are Asian/Pacific Islander.
  • The race and/or ethnicity of teachers vary widely across the region, with greater proportions of minority teachers in Los Angeles County and Los Angeles Unified School District.
  • More than 83% of teachers outside of LACO are Anglos.

Patterns of teacher race and ethnicity differs markedly from patterns in the general population and enrolled students (Chart 3 of 3).

  • In the Five County Region, teachers are far more likely to be Anglos than both the general population and the student population.
  • In 5CR, teachers are far less likely to be Latinos than both the general population and the student population.
  • In 5CR, teachers are less likely to be African American or Asian/Pacific Islander than both the general population and the student population.
