Academic Performance Indexes and Teacher and School Characteristics
(2 Charts)

Schools with higher proportions of fully credentialed teachers tend to have higher Academic Performance Index scores.
(Chart 1 of 2)

Data Source: http://api.cde.ca.gov/datafiles.html and http://www.cde.ca.gov/demographics/files/paif.htm

  • There are very few schools with less than 40% of teachers who are fully credentialed, and because of small sample sizes, median API scores for schools with less than 40% credentialed teachers are erratic.
  • For schools with 40% credentialed teachers or more, there is a distinct relationship between the proportion of teachers who are fully credentialed and the API score: a higher API score is obtained by schools with a higher proportion of credentialed teachers.

Schools that are on traditional calendars have higher Academic Performance Index scores.
(Chart 2 of 2)

Data Source: http://api.cde.ca.gov/datafiles.html

  • Median API scores are consistently 100 points higher in traditional calendar schools than in year-round schools.
  • The relationship between school calendar and median API score is somewhat stronger in Los Angeles County.
