Experienced Teachers: How Common? How Much Variation?
 

While there is an "old guard," a substantial proportion of teachers are relatively new.

  • About one in four teachers throughout the region has demonstrated a long-term commitment to the profession, with more than twenty years of experience teaching.
  • However, an even larger proportion, more than a third of teachers throughout the region, has been teaching for five years or less, indicating substantial turnover in the ranks.

Other Points (Not Shown on Chart):

  • About 16% of teachers across the region are in their first two years teaching.
  • In Los Angeles Unified School District, about 19% of teachers are in their first two years teaching.
  • Novice teachers are somewhat less common in the region outside of Los Angeles County.
